PSAC congratulates Scott Brison on his appointment as President of the Treasury Board Secretariat and looks forward to working together to restore public services and improve working conditions for public sector workers. “The integrity of and respect for the public service was a central issue during the election campaign for our members and for Canadians who rely on the vital services our members provide,” said Robyn Benson, National President of PSAC. “We look forward to turning the page and working together to rebuild and restore that trust.”

PSAC is opposed to the government’s new security screening policy — which includes credit checks and fingerprinting of public service employees — and will be challenging it. We are currently gathering evidence to file a court challenge and a privacy complaint with the Privacy Commissioner’s office. “We are concerned that these checks will be an unwarranted gross violation of personal privacy and they could put people's livelihoods in jeopardy without cause. We are also fearful that the policy could be applied in an arbitrary way," said PSAC President Robyn Benson.

The federal government announced in the budget that it plans to eliminate the existing sick leave provisions for federal public service workers, whether or not an agreement is reached at the bargaining table. All PSAC members should know that our union will not be intimidated by this threat.  Any move by the government to make unilateral changes to our collective agreement is a violation of our constitutional Charter rights to bargain collectively without government interference.

Please see the attached notice from PSAC National President Robyn Benson regarding National Public Service Week activities which takes place June 14 – 20, 2015. At the March 2015 meeting of the National Board of Directors, we once again called for a boycott of NPSW. Tony Clement and the Conservative government are at the Treasury Board, Parks and CFIA bargaining tables intent on dismantling our sick leave and benefits and at CRA the employer refuses to bargain meaningfully.

The long-awaited arbitration decisions for both the Regional Officer and the Field Interviewer bargaining units were finally released late on Monday, March 30, 2015. PSAC will be analyzing the arbitral awards for both the RO and FI units and will be posting this analysis, along with previously signed-off language, on the PSAC website as soon as possible.

The 2014 Public Service Employee Survey released yesterday continues to demonstrate the negative impact of public service cuts. The survey results also raise major concerns about the continuing problems of harassment and poor mental health in the public service. Despite these problems, most public service workers are committed to doing a good job.

We have been in dispute with SSO concerning a new Collective Agreement since bargaining began in February, 2012. There have been petition drives, picketing of SSO offices, a rally at Stats Can headquarters in Ottawa, complaints filed with the Labour Board, and arbitration hearings. When SSO challenged our ability to have certain seniority-based proposals dealt with in arbitration, we took SSO before the Labour Board and ultimately to court.
