The PSAC BC Region has three Human Rights Committees who meet regularly to in person and via conference call to discuss issues and plan events relating to PSAC's Aboriginal, PWD, GLBT, and Racially Visible caucus members.

The BC Region also has four Regional Council members who represent equity-seeking groups. They are responsible for PSAC members within their constituencies and speak for them at the Council, they seek to promote the activism of PSAC members within these constituencies, and they ensure and promote representation for their constituencies throughout our Union.

May 17 is the International Day against Homophobia. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) stands in solidarity with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities.Respect in the workplace is essential. PSAC is there to support our members who face the hostility, homophobia or transphobia that can sometimes occur in the workplace. We are also engaged in bargaining collective agreements that meet the particular needs of our GLBT members. And we continue to work to better protect the human rights of transgendered people.

PSAC is calling on the government to recognize that austerity isn't working – Canadians have lost services they need and job cuts are hurting the economy. You can't create jobs and prosperity by cutting jobs and services.

The Federal Court last week upheld a decision by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal that employers cannot discriminate against employees with family obligations.The ruling means that the employer has the obligation to find workable solutions on a case-by-case basis so that workers like Fiona Johnstone can balance work and family, to the point of undue hardship.

Black History Month recognizes the contributions and achievements of Black people in Canada.Jean Augustine, the first Black woman elected to Parliament proposed recognizing February as Black History Month and in December 1995, Parliament unanimously adoped her motion.People of African descent were first brought to Canada as slaves. Slavery existed in Canada from 1628 until it was abolished in Upper Canada in 1793 and throughout the entire British empire in 1833.
