Laura Aucoin is a young worker from BC who travelled to Guatemala in February 2016 as part of the PSAC Social Justice Fund's Education In Action delegation. Along with ten other PSAC members from across the country, Laura was there to learn more about the culture and some of the struggles Mayan people face daily and build solidarity between Canada and indigenous communities in Guatemala.

PSAC BC is encouraging members 35 years of age and under to attend the B.C. Federation of Labour Young Workers School at Camp Jubilee. This year the School takes place from June 17 to 19, with participants departing from Deep Cove on Friday afternoon and returning Sunday afternoon. The School is a weekend filled with meeting young workers from other unions, great workshops, and fun outdoor activities! Registration is $350 which covers accommodation (shared bunkhouses), meals, and a conference fee.

The first-ever CLC National Young Workers Conference will be held from October 23 to 25, 2016. This conference will bring together young workers, youth activists, and allies to build young workers power to address the changing nature of work, empower young and new leadership in workplaces and unions, and lay the framework for a renewed and growing labour movement.

My experience at the BCFed Renewal conference was extremely interesting. As I’ve mentioned in previous reports attending BCFed events, the comparison between municipal, provincial, and federal unions is quite interesting as the issue that member face vary greatly. It is informative to hear different perspectives and learn about the different union structures, as well as to hear how the same issue (example: accommodation) can affect members in such a variety of ways. It was refreshing in that it challenges the thought process and provides a forum to exchange information.

Congratulations to Courtney from the BC Mainland & Haida Gwaii area and Joshua from Vancouver Island, winners in our final survey draw of 2015. We have closed the survey for 2015 but look for it again in 2016 with new content, especially seeking input from our young workers about our PSAC-BC Young Worker Conference tentatively scheduled for the fall.
